STAY: Coastal Motels
I have been following this resurgence of gorgeous retro motels popping up all over the country, and am completely smitten with the concept. Turning old-fashioned motels into bright, colourful and modern destinations for a stay is genius. Creating unique spaces to enjoy with reasonably priced rooms, and each with their own personality mimicking their region.
For me – motels are all about road-tripping – working your way along a route and stopping intermittently to pause and enjoy each stop for what it has to offer. So I planned a little coastal route down the South Coast of NSW to experience three different recently-renovated and updated motels. I absolutely recommend each of them for a stay – just choose your region and your vibe and you can’t go wrong with any of them!
MOTEL MOLLY - MOLLYMOOK NSW
This is a pastel dream – a Mediterranean-inspired haven just steps away from beautiful Mollymook beach. Three gelato-coloured buildings make up this incredible motel, plus an oasis pool area with an outdoor dining area and bouji vending machine. With retro Smeg appliances, and luxurious bathroom products – this is a motel with serious style. A seaside stay full of fun – wander to the beach, enjoy fresh seafood cooked on a BBQ overlooking the cute pool and watch the sun set with a glass of wine (in a Motel Molly branded glass of course!) with the sound of the ocean in the background.
THE ISLA - BATEHAVEN NSW
Modern and bright, with a 70s colour palette – The Isla is fun and breezy and oh so charming! Retro charm with Instagram moments at every turn. A perfectly stocked Cantina (mini-bar area), games room and a fun spin on the old-school motel pool – this is such a great stop to add into your coastal adventures. Beautifully modern rooms with terrazzo detailing, brass bathroom finishes and a dreamy colour palette – if you’re looking to stay anywhere in this area– this should definitely, be on your list!
HILLCREST MERIMBULA - MERIMBULA NSW
Perched overlooking beautiful Merimbula – Hillcrest Motel has retro bones, but tasteful modern upgrades making it the perfect for a restful stay on the Sapphire Coast. The trend of digital check-in has thankfully skipped this motel – with wonderful staff greeting you on arrival, and breakfast available in the sunny dining room. Plenty of room options (including some with direct ocean views), a tennis court and pool – Hillcrest has managed to combine the charm of old-school motel with an air of understated elegance. An absolute gem of a stay – I am already planning my return trip!
